Actor-turned-director Chen Sicheng follows his blockbuster directorial debut Beijing Love Story with the mystery comedy Detective Chinatown. Lost in Thailand's Wang Baoqiang returns to the Land of Smiles for another hilarious performance as a chatty and unrefined bumpkin, this time a private detective based in Bangkok's Chinatown. Breakout teen star Liu Haoran plays his unlikely partner in crime-solving in this zippy buddy detective comedy. Comedy regulars Chen He, Shao Yang, Da Peng and Xiao Shenyang, as well as Chen's wife, Tong Liya, and child actress Wendy Zhang, also appear in Detective Chinatown. Stuttering youth Qin Feng (Liu Haoran) is down in the dumps after failing his police academy interview, so his grandmother sends him on a one-week vacation to Bangkok where his uncle Tang Ren (Wang Baoqiang) lives. Tang Ren has bragged to everyone back home that he's the No. 1 Detective of Bangkok Chinatown, but Qin Feng quickly sees through his sleuthing work to just be odd jobs for hire. His latest job involved making a delivery for a craftsman, and when the man turns up dead, Tang Ren becomes the top murder suspect. What's more, the craftsman was actually a robber and the loot has disappeared. Before he even knows what's hit him, Tang Ren is suddenly on the run from both the police and the dead robber's partners. Dragged along for the ride, Qin Feng uses his analytical skills to help Tang Ren get to the bottom of the dark and convoluted case. |
