Lau Kar Leung is famous for period martial arts epics like The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, but the first Tiger on the Beat adventure proved the director could more than hold his own in the modern-day action comedy territory of Jackie Chan and company. Although Tiger on the Beat 2 tells a new, standalone story, this 1990 follow-up reunites most of the talent from the original film - with the obvious exception of Chow Yun Fat. Filling Chow's shoes is no small order, but Danny Lee (who played cat to Chow's mouse in The Killer) is serviceable, and Conan Lee returns with more of the insane stunt work that makes the Tiger on the Beat films action classics. Watch for the scene in which Conan leaps off a bridge, fails to grab a lamppost, and plummets 30 feet to the pavement. This stunt gone wrong put Conan in the hospital for months, but made the final cut of the film! |
